I h...Wow - and here's where the confusion sets in. I hadn't realized that the Oregon domestic partnerships would be identical to New Jersey civil unions in all but name. There seems to be this informal hierarchy that marriage is better than a civil union which is better than a domestic partnership. In fact, I noticed that the Oregon bill originally called the relationship "civil union" but was changed to "domestic partnership." And yet they grant the same rights.

And yet... there will still inevitably be news reports that confuse the issue by not including Oregon (or California - or Hawaii?) on lists of states that provide the legal equivalent of marriage.

There really should be one nationwide term for "the equivalent of marriage." Granted, "marriage" would be the best term of all, but surely two terms ("marriage" and "civil union") are enough.

Of course, Andy, you realize the only reason this passed was because you moved there, right? They knew that with such a fabulous homosexual living in their state they would have to celebrate your presence in some way!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8387588.post-24081941230794421072007-05-04T14:28:00.000-04:002007-05-04T14:28:00.000-04:00I don't fully understand the semantics of the big ...I don't fully understand the semantics of the big "M" word either - but legal jargon is all a game of semantics anyway. It comes to the same thing - legally recognized unions - which is good.

There are larger companies in the Beaverton area (Tek, Nike, etc...) who only hire through staffing agencies... generally they run through temps until they find one that fits the job, keep them on under the staffing agency for 90 days, then go through a direct hire process... so those places are good if you want to get a foot in the door to a company like that.

And about dating Quinn - thank you for reminding me! It's no wonder I was so surprised to find out you were gay.Jadehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13959637910926242468noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8387588.post-55100047509936319152007-05-04T13:38:00.000-04:002007-05-04T13:38:00.000-04:00ok...then maybe it was a statewide referendom defi...ok...
then maybe it was a statewide referendom defining marriage as man/woman only then?

i just remember something in recent history, politically, and then a followup answer(such as this) that kinda settled the issue in a gay freindly manner.
clearly, my memory was way off.

so, all responsibilities, except the marriage penalty in the tax code. not too bad.Ginohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09606046924332159076noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8387588.post-79740978973553630922007-05-04T10:42:00.000-04:002007-05-04T10:42:00.000-04:00I think -- you know, I'm new in town -- that Multn...I think -- you know, I'm new in town -- that Multnomah County (where Portland is) had domestic partner benefits, but that is different than having a statewide legal structure that is parallel to marriage. Multnomah County did issue civil marriage licenses to same-sex couples in 2004, but that was stopped by court order.Andyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13524483460829802534noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8387588.post-14625617647677120112007-05-04T00:49:00.000-04:002007-05-04T00:49:00.000-04:00i thought OR already had that.i thought OR already had that.Ginohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09606046924332159076noreply@blogger.com
