Okay, *wish* I'd known you're supposed to make an appointment before you show up at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store in SoHo. But it all worked out okay. I flirted with the right Genius who squeezed me in. (Um, by the way, some HOT geeks working there. I might have to break my iPod more often.)
At first there was a glimmer of hope: the tech discovered some little bit of foreign debris inside the hole-thingy at the bottom of the iPod where you attach the cord-thingy. (Look, I can extemporize at length and in detail on the way Verdi's compositional style matured during the course of his career, so I don't care that I'm a technical idiot.) This was very exciting as it made sense that this would be interfering with the re-charging and updating process.
Alas, that wasn't the problem...or at least it didn't solve it. The Genius listened to it and said, "You hear that clicking and whirring sound? The drive is busted." *Sniff*
They do have an iPod recycling program, so I tossed my old one in the heap and got the new 30 gig at a 10% discount. It's uploading now...
And NO, I am not going to put porn on it.
At least until Lent's over.

I just got my first iPod for Christmas this year and I can't clean or do yard work without it. It's nice to see what I have to look forward to... *shudder* I'm glad you found a silver lining of hot geeks for your cloudy weekend!
Glad you were able to get a replacement. That's good of Apple to have a recycling program for electronics...
Well, I'm very passionate about my iPod. First, music is a big part of my life. Second, if you had to spend two whole hours of your day, every day, sitting on a dark subway train (sometimes without getting a seat) I promise you you'd go to great lengths to avoid having to listen to people's inane conversations. Plus, it really does make housework (especially doing the dishes!) a lot more pleasant.
The other thing that's so great is I have ridiculously eclectic tastes in music, and the shuffle feature is very handy. I'm not exaggerating when I say that if I press play I'm likely to get Dolly Parton followed by La Traviata followed by a folksong from Tajikistan followed by Enya followed by the final duet from Siegfried followed by "Blame Canada" followed by Carmen followed by Guys & Dolls...and so forth. Seriously. So I think it's great.
the midtown store opens soon and it will be 24 hours a day, so you can stay up real late, go in a 4am and be the nastiest bitch possible and they still have to help you.
It feels great.
I haven't jumped on that iPod bandwagon either. As shitty as the radio stations are and as much as I run I guess I could invest in one. Maybe I am just holding out on the iPod fad for the same reasons I never caved into the pressure of buying a Palm Pilot for work.
It is distressing to hear that you had to have it replaced so soon though. I would have thought the life expectancy would have been a little longer. But then a friend of mine washed his iPod and it worked fine so I guess there are anomolies on both ends.
A friend of mine was talking about iPod and mentioned how The Beatles are suing Steve Jobs over some music dipute and France is trying to sue iPod for the rights to open source so that any swinging dick can make an app for it.
I don't care for the software restrictions either. I guess I'll just keep ripping my music off the Internet and using my crappy 128MB mp3 player.
Enya? Really, Enya?
The techies at Apple are so tasty.
Yes, Enya. Also Marty Robbins, Eminem, Maria Callas, Paula Abdul, Ravi Shankar and Frank Sinatra. Among others. I have eclectic tastes, what can I say?
