And Every Day, Some Go Away

I'm working on my "Leaving New York/Road Trip" Playlist. Here's what I've got so far:

  1. "Go West," The Village People
  2. "Into the West," Annie Lenox (from The Return of the King)
  3. "Getting out of town," 42nd Street
  4. "Another Hundred People," Company
  5. "Don't Rain on my Parade," Funny Girl
  6. "Tennessee Homesick Blues," Dolly Parton
  7. "The Best is Yet to Come," Frank Sinatra
  8. "Roam," B-52's
  9. "Here I Go Again," Whitesnake

That will probably get me as far as Paramus. Any suggestions? Unfortunately, "Holiday Road" from National Lampoon's Vacation is not available on iTunes, nor is the soundtrack commercially available.

#6 might seem like an odd choice, especially since I'm not going anywhere near Tennessee, but consider the lyrics:

New York City ain't no kind of place
For a country girl suburban gay with a friendly face
If you smile people look at you funny
They take it wrong
The greenest state in the land of the free
And the home of the Grand Ole Opry Tillamook Cheese Factory
Is calling me back to my Smoky Cascade Mountain home

The lyrics from #9 kind of hit home, too.

I also need a name for this adventure. I'm thinking about calling it the Cats Across America Tour. Any other ideas?

You can't have a decent farewell without Blue Eyes singing "One More For the Road"

Under appropriate circumstances that somg will bring tears to your eyes and closure to your heart.

Perhaps you could sing it to the homeless in Central Park! (:

how bout calling it: "the yellow brick road"
or
"hittin the Oregon Trail"

this whole thing is exciting.

If you consider Oregon your home, how about "Homeward Bound" by Simon and Garfunkel.

The Wild Wild West - Escape Club

I'll need some time to think of something, but until then, might I suggest subsituting the Village People's version of "Go West" for the one by the Pet Shop Boys? Far superior, IMHO. :-)

Ooooh, Gary, those are FANTASTIC! Thank you. Errmmm...not sure any of those are available on iTunes. But that was hilarious. Everyone, go look.

"Good Old Days" - Owsley
"Out of L.A." - Jude (the lyrics could work for New York, and I think you'll like his voice if you can enjoy falsetto, although this song isn't the bed example of his falsetto... but there's the song anyway)
"Fly" - Lenny Kravitz
"Closer to Fine" - Indigo Girls
And on the note of Simon & Garfunkel:
"The Boxer" (and I'm laying out my winter clothes and wishing I was gone, going home)
"America" (and walked off to look for America)
"White Daisys Passing" - Rocky Votolato (not that it's about traveling, but looking back, and it's a great background song when you are looking out the window of a car or plane)
"I'll be coming home next year" - Foo Fighters
"The Great Divide" - Bruce Hornsby
"Marrakesh Express" - Crosby Still & Nash
"Countryside" - Chris Stills

That's off the top of my head, if my iPod springs anything up today I'll come back and post it

My list is kindof left-coasty and life-transition-y rather than just Oregon:

"Get the Party Started" Pink ;)
"Private Idaho" B-52s
"Get Out the Map" Indigo Girls
"I'm on My Way" The Proclaimers
pick something random (or everything available) by They Might Be Giants--it's not theme, but it's fun driving music
"I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" ;) U2

And evidence that my CD collection includes the Forrest Gump soundtrack:
"California Dreamin'" The Mamas and the Papas
"Break on Through" The Doors
"San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)" Scott McKenzie
"Turn! Turn! Turn!" The Byrds
"Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" BJ Thomas
"On the Road Again" Willie Nelson

There've gotta be some Beatles tunes, but my tapes are all buried ... and REM seems like they oughta have something ... isn't there that one about headlights shining through a picture in reverse ... ?

I swear, my parents owned a good percentage of those records! I loved the "More songs and hymns from the Polka Mass". I think I would have liked to have heard that one!

Okay, any trip we take has to include the song "Elevation" by U2. It's just traveling music, for some reason. Keeps me dancing, even in my car seat.

"3,000 Miles" - Ellis Paul
"Find Your Grail" -Spamalot
"Omaha" - Counting Crows
"Drive in Drive Out" - DMB
"Let's Ride" - INXS
"Wheel in the Sky" - Journey
"Carry on My Wayward Son" - Kansas
"Shaking the Tree" - Peter Gabriel
"Tonight, Tonight" - Smashing Pumpkins
"Come Sail Away" - Styx
"Come Down" - Toad the Wet Sprocket
"Beautiful Day" - U2
"Send It Up" - Vertical Horizon
"Bitter Sweet Symphony" - The Verve

If you like "3,000 Miles", listen to "God's Promise" by Ellis Paul. Something overdone like "O Fortuna" when you leave? "Fanfare of the Common Man" when you arrive?

Andy said...

No, the arrival music is "Entry of the Gods into Valhalla" from Das Rheingold, of course.
