An Evolutionary Explanation for Atheism

I've been giving more thought to the recent New York Times Magazine article "Darwin's God." It occurred to me that if we accept the scientific evidence that "children are born with a tendency to believe in omniscience, invisible minds, immaterial souls," then one possible explanation for the emergence of atheism would be when a person rejects the dogma they have been taught by their family and/or culture because it conflicts with what they innately know to be true about the nature of the Divine. In fact, that's one of the most basic arguments atheists make: "If there were a God, he'd..." Because they know better.

Hello, time change. When the alarm clock went off in the pitch-black at 6:00 this morning, I have to say I wasn't especially enthusiastic about it. Nevertheless, I stumbled out of bed and did my usual Monday yoga routine. Normally the cats start trying to wake me up shortly before the alarm clock goes off so they can have their breakfast. Today I noticed, as I was unrolling the yoga mat, they had both gone back to sleep.

Speaking of The New York Times, I was looking at a men's fashion slideshow (the model is beautiful) when I came across this caption: "Lanvin green-and gray knitted silk tank, $603."

Actually, the entire on-paper version of yesterday's NY Times men's fashion supplement is filled with beautiful men.

And do you have a specifically "Monday" yoga routine that's different from other weekday yoga routines?

(Which brings to mind one my favorite "West Wing" lines: "You have a Tuesday suit?" It won't mean anything if you haven't seen it.)

I adjust what I do daily based on what I sense I need at the time, but typically Monday is more athletic, focusing on a quasi-aerobic vinyasa series to get the blood flowing and wake me up for the week ahead. Tuesdays are standing poses, Wednesday is balance, Thursday is seated-poses and thigh/hip openers, Friday is backbends...and the weekends are usually sleepin-asana. Obviously every day combines a little bit of everything, but I like to have a specific focus.

Man, I need to be better about yoga... I admire your discipline. However, I do have to say, I'm very good at the sleepin-asanas.

The atheism point is really interesting. I didn't realize there was scientific evidence that children innately tend to believe in a god... I know there's a verse in the Bible that says God's law is written in our hearts -- maybe it's something along those lines. And when people experience that cognitive dissonance with dogma, they may feel like that have to make a choice between the two.

I think the most I've ever paid for a single item of clothing was around $500. It was one of those fancy formal dresses. I'm a sucker for formal dresses.

(I loved your turnaround on the innate sense of God thing, too :). )
