Retorting something to the effect of "I can see one" aside (far too corny), I can't help but think a cough might have had the desired effect. People often don't notice those sitting next to them.
He obviously wasn't looking (or just was an idiot).
I have been guilty of saying something similar but always, always with the caveat "no offense to those present" or words to that effect...
Clearly his concept of cute leaves much to be desired.
...and then he got up and made his way to the bathroom with his white walking stick...
