Democrats: Just Stop. Now.

Okay, so my personal email box was filled today with emails from liberal organizations crowing over Tom DeLay's resignation.

Ahem.

Look, he's a smarmy bastard, and a little Schadenfreude is in perfect order.

But Democrats, don't you dare go claiming any credit for this, you useless, impotent bags of agenda-less posturing. Tom DeLay's downfall was purely his own fault: he got tangled up in his own web of excess and corruption. And his vacant seat will go to a Republican in the next election.

No, Democrats, no points for you on this one. If you'd managed to defeat him in an election, you could take some credit. But this lying, ham-fisted, base-pandering partisan hack was serving his ELEVENTH TERM in Congress. ELEVEN. For SHAME, Democrats, that you couldn't find anyone to defeat this nincompoop.

****

In his resignation statement this afternoon, DeLay said, "I have no regrets today."

Therefore, I would like to dedicate a song to the former Hammer: Edith Piaf's "Non, je ne regrette rien," available on iTunes for 99 cents.

Bad choice of song, Andy! The next lines are ni le bien qu'on m'a fait / ni le mal, tout ça m'est bien égal, which is to say "neither the good nor the bad things that have happened to me, it's all the same as far as I'm concerned". Doesn't sound as self-inflicted as DeLay's misdemeanours ...

Hmm. I thought you were just going to shun the Democrats out of decency. Oh well, as long as you're shunning them I'm happy!

If you want to talk decency, then we should talk about a party that has long embraced a man who swindled Native Americans out of their money; a man who set up "charities" as a front for selling access to top political figures; a man for whom lobbyists' dollars were more persuasive than facts; a man who agreed to pull the plug when his father could not survive without life support and then instigated legislation to prevent Terri Schiavo's husband from doing EXACTLY the same thing; a man who used bigotry against homosexuals as a rallying cry to deflect attention away from America's REAL problems; a man who blamed the Tsunami victims for their own deaths; etc.

I accused the Democrats of impotence. You want to talk about decency? The Bush Republicans are utterly vile. They lied to start a WAR for God's sake. They are beneath contempt.

Tony: no, I chose the song deliberately. I think it does perfectly encapsulate what DeLay "claims" he feels at this moment. Quite frankly I think he regrets a LOT and is about to regret it a lot more; also, it would irk him no end to have a French song dedicated to him.

In that case, it's my turn to stand corrected. I like the darkness of your humour, Andy.

I agree that it was time for Delay to resign (months ago in fact) but I don't think piling on any person whose life is crashing down before them, who put their party's interest ahead of their personal interest all their lives, is a very decent thing to do. I would say the same of Ted Kennedy. While I might make the occasional Chappequidic joke while he's doing well, if he were ever to have such a sad unraveling as this, I would not make any jokes about it, nor would I criticize him.
