No, Wait; Second Worst Vacation Ever

It occurred to me that the worst vacation I ever took was a trip to Victoria, B.C., with my father when I was 16, in a risky attempt to repair our relationship after I came out. He asked me, "So...am I supposed to start buying you dresses for your birthday?"

I didn't speak to him for about a year and a half after that.

That's understandable. No one wants a dress for a birthday gift- we want something fun- maybe a pair of shoes with a matching flirty outfit- something to make you feel younger, not more "sophisticated," I like to make those kinds of purchases on my own time, because they say something about where I am in my life and where I want to be. But that's just me...

Actually, it sounds like your dad just made a bad joke to deal with what was for him an awkward situation. Don't we all do that from time to time?

No, you had to have been there. He really just didn't get it.

I take it that "not getting it" was the source of the awkwardness on the topic.
