Parent Fears Cross-Dressing Addictive

SPURGER, Texas -- an annual homecoming tradition in this small town north of Houston where "boys dress like girls and vice versa" has been canceled after a parent complained about the "homosexual overtones."

"It's like experimenting with drugs," [Delana] Davies said. "You just keep playing with it and it becomes customary. ... If it's OK to dress like a girl today, then why is it not OK in the future?"

It has been replaced with "Camo Day" -- yup, the kids will dress in camouflage, I guess pretending to be soldiers, hunters or white trash at Wal-Mart on laundry day. Details here.

Well, in this parent's defense, I would like to add that dressing outside of traditional gender garb can be very confusing. I can't tell you how many times I've been walking down the street, seen a stocky, big-armed guy with nice, close-cropped, clean-cut hair, and then it turns around and it's a lesbian! The disappointment is crushing.

Furthermore, this whole Queer Eye fascination is getting us down a slippery slope. If straight guys start wearing nice clothes, using "product" in their hair and having out of season tans, you'll never be able to tell who's gay again. Have you been to Europe lately? It's impossible to know with whom you can flirt. (Fortunately, European straight men are much less likely to kick your ass if you mistake them for a Friend of Dorothy.)
